Dollywood Smoky Mountain Christmas 2026: My One-Day Plan
Smoky Mountain Christmas runs Nov. 6, 2026 to Jan. 3, 2027, and it's my favorite time to be at Dollywood. The park fills up with more than six million lights, and the best part of the day doesn't start until the sun goes down. You'll want to mentally prepare for a slow stroll through the park, taking in all the lights and festivities. Christmas season at Dollywood is not the time to get on every thrill ride.
Our family cabin in Wears Valley, on the quiet side of the Smokies, is about 29 minutes from the park, so we've done a lot of Christmas days there, and we always have a Christmas tree set up inside the cabin during November and December. Here's how I'd plan a single one, from a slow morning at the cabin to the lights after dark. The full plan is free right here on the page, and you can get the printable version by email.

Hours can change, so check the calendar on dollywood.com or the Dollywood app for your date before you go. Ticket prices change too, so check Dollywood directly.
If you're planning a longer trip, my Christmas in the Smokies guide covers the Winterfest lights in Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg's Winter Magic and the rest of the season around town.
What's new and returning at Dollywood Smoky Mountain Christmas 2026?
Here's what Dollywood is highlighting for 2026:
- Peppermint Valley in Country Fair. Dollywood's festival page calls it new. Country Fair turns into a candy cane land of red and white lights. Kids love it, and so do I.
- Snow in the Grove. Every night, Wildwood Grove turns into a winter scene with the glowing Roly Poly characters and the Wildwood Tree, with light, color, music and falling snow. If you have little ones, this is the one not to miss.
- Glacier Ridge and Christmas Reflections. Blue and white lights through the back of the park, and five trees of light glowing on the pond in Rivertown Junction.
- Indoor shows. "Christmas in the Smokies" returns to Celebrity Theater, along with "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" and "Heidi Parton's A Christmas To Remember." These are also the best way to warm up.
- Outdoor shows. "Appalachian Christmas" and "O Holy Night" are back, plus the Candlelight Carolers.
- The Tasting Pass. It lets you try several festival foods for one price, which is the easiest way to taste the Christmas menu.
- The Smoky Mountain Christmas Guided Tour. This is a paid evening walking tour with a collectible lanyard, reserved seats on the Dollywood Express, a character meet and greet, a holiday treat and a hot drink. Park admission isn't included.
- Santa. Santa is in the park through Dec. 23, so plan an earlier visit if that's on your list.
Show times change daily, so check the Dollywood app the morning you go and plan the evening around the shows you care about most.
When is the best time to see the Dollywood Christmas lights?
After dark. In November and December the sun sets early, before most people think about dinner, so you get hours of lights even on a short park day.
So I ride in the daylight and save the walking for after dark. Rides run through most of the season, but they can close for weather, so check the app for what's running when you get there. My best tips for timing:
- Ride the coasters in the afternoon. It's the warmest part of the day, and the lights don't need you yet.
- If Lightning Rod is running, ride it first. It's the first coaster to close for weather, and some days it doesn't reopen.
- Pick your day carefully. Go midweek in early November or early December if you can, and try a Sunday if you have one. Most people are driving home, so the lines are much shorter. The week between Christmas and New Year's is the busiest of the year.
A one-day Dollywood Christmas plan
This is the shape of my day. The printable planner has it hour by hour.
- Take a slow morning at the cabin. No need to be at the gate early on a Christmas day. Have breakfast, then make the 29-minute drive.
- Start at the back of the park. Walk past the shops and go to Wildwood Grove and Timber Canyon first, while the lines are short. If you want the full ride strategy, my one-day Dollywood itinerary breaks down every major ride and both of my tracks.
- Eat an early dinner. Once the lights come on, every line in the park gets longer, and the restaurants fill up fast.
- Walk the lights. Start on Showstreet, then work through Peppermint Valley in Country Fair.
- Finish in Wildwood Grove for Snow in the Grove, then catch an indoor show if you want to warm up.
- End with a slow walk back through Craftsman's Valley. It glows with a soft candlelight look, and it's my favorite way to leave the park.
With little kids, do the Wildwood Grove rides before dark, then stay put for Snow in the Grove so nobody has to walk across the park tired.
What should I wear to Dollywood at Christmas?
Dress for a cold night, not a cool afternoon. It gets cold fast once the sun goes down, and Dollywood is built on a hillside, so you'll walk a lot.
- Layers you can take off for rides and put back on for the lights
- Gloves and a hat
- Warm, waterproof, broken-in shoes
- Hand warmers in your pockets
- A lanyard under your coat for your cards and ID, so you can ride all day without a bag
A note on the trolley: Pigeon Forge's city trolleys, including the Dollywood route from Patriot Park, don't run on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. If you're going near one of those days, plan to drive.
Where should I stay for Dollywood's Smoky Mountain Christmas?
After a cold night in the park, I love coming back to the quiet. Our family cabin in Wears Valley is about 29 minutes from Dollywood, and it's set up for exactly this kind of day:
- The 7-person hot tub on the covered lower patio is the best way to warm up after the lights.
- The stone fire pit has mountain views and 8 chairs. We don't stock firewood, so pick up a bundle on the way up.
- A lit Christmas tree will be twinkling inside, next to the fireplace, ready to share Christmas stories and soak in the memories at the cabin.
- Smart-lock self check-in, so you can come and go on your own schedule.
- A washer and dryer for wet gloves and muddy jeans.
- A swinging daybed on the deck for your morning coffee.
- The game room with a pool table, ping pong, a popcorn machine and 3 retro arcades, including NFL Blitz.
- A full kitchen for hot cocoa tonight and a slow breakfast tomorrow.
- The cabin sleeps 10, with 3 bedrooms and 3 baths, and has 1,000 Mbps (1-gig) Wi-Fi.
Our guests rate the cabin 4.9 across Airbnb and Vrbo. You can check dates and book direct on our booking page.
