Hidden Gem: The Best Things to Do in Wears Valley, TN

Most visitors to the Smoky Mountains never discover Wears Valley. They stay on the Pigeon Forge Parkway, battle the traffic on US-441, and never realize that one valley over — just 10 minutes from the quieter western entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park — is one of the most beautiful, peaceful, and genuinely rewarding destinations in all of Tennessee. This guide is for the traveler who wants more than the strip. Welcome to Wears Valley.

Where Is Wears Valley, Tennessee?

Wears Valley is a small, rural community in Sevier County, Tennessee, located along Tennessee State Route 321 between Pigeon Forge and Townsend. It sits in a valley between Wears Valley Ridge and the western edge of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The valley takes its name from Samuel Wear, one of the earliest European settlers in the region, who built a blockhouse here in the 1790s.

Today, Wears Valley is a beloved destination for those in the know — a community of local farms, mountain cabins, craft breweries, and independent businesses nestled in what many locals consider the most beautiful valley in the Smokies. Smoky Mountains Lodge calls Wears Valley home, and we are proud to share our favorite spots and activities in this hidden gem of a destination.

Things to Do in Wears Valley, TN

1. Enter Great Smoky Mountains National Park via the Townsend Entrance

The single biggest advantage of staying in Wears Valley is proximity to the Townsend (west) entrance of Great Smoky Mountains National Park — approximately 10 minutes away. Unlike the Gatlinburg entrance, which can back up for miles during peak season, the Townsend entrance is peaceful, scenic, and almost never congested.

From the Townsend entrance, you have quick access to some of the park’s best experiences:

  • Cades Cove — An 11-mile loop through a historic valley with white-tail deer, black bears, wild turkeys, and restored pioneer homesteads. One of the most iconic experiences in the entire national park system, and be sure to see our ultimate driving guide and audio tour!
  • Abrams Falls Trail — A 5-mile round-trip hike to a spectacular 20-foot waterfall with a deep plunge pool. One of the most rewarding waterfall hikes in the Smokies. See our top recommended hikes in the Smokys.
  • The Townsend Wye — A calm, clear swimming hole where Little River splits. A beloved local spot for wading, tubing, and picnicking in summer.
  • Little River Road — A scenic drive along the Little River corridor with multiple pull-offs, swimming holes, and trailheads leading deeper into the park.

2. Explore the Wears Valley Scenic Loop

The drive through Wears Valley itself is an experience. Tennessee Route 321 winds through the valley between Pigeon Forge and Townsend with pastoral farmland, mountain ridges, and local businesses on both sides. Stop at roadside farm stands, browse local craft shops, and take in mountain views that have been largely undisturbed by commercial development.

Early morning and evening drives along this corridor during fall foliage season are among the most breathtaking visual experiences in the entire Smoky Mountains region — without the crowds of the Gatlinburg end of the park.

3. Visit Old Mill Square in Nearby Pigeon Forge

Just 25 minutes from Wears Valley, Old Mill Square in Pigeon Forge is a charming collection of historic buildings centered around a working grist mill that has been operating since 1830. Browse the Old Mill Country Store (stocked with stone-ground grains, local jams, and Southern pantry staples), have a meal at the Old Mill Restaurant, and pick up hand-made pottery from the local potters’ shop. This is the Pigeon Forge that exists before the strip — authentic, historic, and genuinely lovely.

4. Tubing and Swimming at the Little River

The Little River flows out of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and through the Townsend area just 10 minutes from Wears Valley. In summer, the calm stretches of the river are perfect for tubing, wading, and swimming. Several outfitters in Townsend rent tubes and provide shuttle service. This is one of the best free (or nearly free) activities in the entire Smoky Mountains region, and the crowds are a fraction of what you’ll find at the Gatlinburg-side swimming holes.

5. Wildlife Viewing

Wears Valley and the surrounding area is exceptional wildlife habitat. White-tailed deer are commonly seen grazing in the valley fields, especially in the early morning and at dusk. The drive into Cades Cove offers some of the best black bear viewing opportunities in the eastern United States — the park is home to an estimated 1,500 black bears. Wild turkeys, great blue herons, and an array of songbirds round out a remarkable wildlife-watching experience.

6. Mountain Biking and Road Cycling

The roads of Wears Valley are a favorite of road cyclists, offering gentle to moderate grades with spectacular mountain scenery and very light traffic. On certain mornings in summer, the Cades Cove loop is closed to vehicles and open exclusively to cyclists and pedestrians — one of the most memorable biking experiences in Tennessee. For more cycling options, see our guide to bike rides and rentals in the Smoky Mountains.

7. Day Trips to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg

Staying in Wears Valley does not mean giving up access to the region’s most popular attractions — it just means you enjoy them on your own terms and come back to peace and quiet each evening. Pigeon Forge is 25-29 minutes away, Gatlinburg is 30 minutes away, and the routes from Wears Valley avoid most of the worst traffic corridors.

Must-do day trips from Wears Valley include:

8. Stargazing

One of the most underrated activities in Wears Valley is simply looking up. With minimal light pollution compared to the Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg corridors, the night sky over Wears Valley is breathtaking on clear nights. The Milky Way is often visible in late summer and early fall. Bring a star chart or download a stargazing app and spend an evening on the deck of your cabin — it is one of the most memorable and cost-free experiences the region offers.

9. Fall Foliage Viewing

Fall leaves in the Smokys

October in Wears Valley is extraordinary. The valley’s mix of hardwoods — maples, oaks, tulip poplars, and dogwoods — produces a spectacular fall color display that typically peaks in mid-to-late October. The combination of valley farmland, mountain ridges, and forest creates a layered foliage landscape that photographers and leaf-peepers travel from across the country to experience.
